Back-To-School With Education Dean Donna Wiseman

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland’s College of Education is moving rapidly to ensure that its students are prepared for the classrooms of the 21st Century. Using research to find best practices, enhancing classrooms with the latest technology and reaching out across campus and around the world, the college has its eyes set firmly on the future.

One major focus is on training math and science (STEM) teachers. "We are working closely with Maryland school districts to create custom programs that respond to the districts’ specific needs in teacher shortage areas related to STEM," says Education Dean Donna Wiseman. She adds, "The college has created new teacher certification pathways for students with interests in specific STEM-related disciplines – including a newly developed program focusing on middle school instruction."

The need for more STEM teachers is also pushing research on a number of fronts.Why do students select careers in math and science? How can the university do a better job supporting female students who want to choose STEM careers? The college is also taking a leadership role in helping establish a pre-engineering program. "One of our research faculty members (Professor Leigh Abts), who holds a joint appointment in the School of Engineering, is working with the federal government and several other universities to develop the curriculum, professional development for teachers, and assessments appropriate for preparing high school students to study engineering at the university level."

Dean Wiseman is also excited about the federal Race to the Top competition – the state of Maryland won a 0 million dollar grant from the Department of Education on August 24. She says the College of Education is well-positioned to help the the state. "Along with on-line and blended teacher development, the college will work to provide professional development for working teachers, says Wiseman." But she adds, "We will also need to adjust our programs for future teachers so they will graduate with the skills needed to succeed in Maryland schools." The Education dean says the college can also be of great help to the state in the development of a database to track student performance in K-12.

Wiseman says classroom technology in the college is being upgraded, and a "classroom of the future" has been created that will let future teachers "take advantage of the interactive whiteboards, cutting edge document cameras, and student response systems" being found in more and more schools across the nation. But she warns that technology, in and of itself, is only a tool for for enhancing teaching and learning. Technology won’t make better teachers, she says. "We must use it in ways that promote learning and help our future teachers and therefore their students experience highly motivational and innovative teaching."
